After upgrading Windows Server package resources like RAM, CPU will be increased automatically. But disk volume is assigned to your server from the system side. However, it is not allocated or attached to an existing partition. So, to use a free space after the upgrade, you need to extend a partition. In Windows Server, you can merge the newly available disk space into one drive by expanding your original drive. Or you can create a new disk. Managing a partition can lead to data loss, as a result. Time4VPS strongly recommends backing up the data on your VPS before the procedure.
In this tutorial, we will use a built-in Disk Management tool.
Drive Extension
1. First of all, connect to your Windows Server via RDP. Find a tutorial here: https://www.hostens.com/knowledgebase/rdp-connection-to-windows/
2. You can manage a disk space allocation from the desktop of your Windows server: select ‘Tools’ > ‘Computer Management’;
3. Select ‘Disk Management’ in the left panel under the folder ‘Storage’;
The left panel of ‘Disk Management’ represents the current formatted hard drive for your Windows server. Usually, it is a disk (C:). The right panel represents the amount of unallocated space;
4. Choose the C:\\ drive and right-click on it. Select ‘Extend Volume’ from the drop-down menu;
An ‘Extend Volume Wizard’ will show up. To proceed, click ‘Next.’
5. So, if you wish to add all available space to the disk C:\\ drive (Disk 0), do not change default settings and only press ‘Next’.
As a result, after this step, you will see that the disk space increased to the maximum.
6. Above all, to finalize the upgrade of disk space, click ‘Finish.’
Verification Of The Disk Space
Now in ‘Computer Management’ you can check the disk drive volume that is available to use. Open the ‘Computer Manager’ from the ‘Server Manager’ and check the disk size for the C:\\ drive in ‘Disk Management’.
